A book metadata record is first created after a contract has been signed.

PBN

PBNs (punctum books numbers) are internal identifiers for book projects. This system was introduced in 2019 and retroactively applied to the entire catalog. The first four digits of a PBN are assigned once a contract has been signed.

PBNs have the following structure:

xxxx.y.zz

  • xxxx contains a four-digit code starting at 0000 for each book project
  • y indicates the output format
    • 0: print-on-demand paperback
    • 1: PDF
    • 2: EPUB
  • zz indicates the book/chapter
    • 00: the entire book
    • 01: front matter
    • 02 and higher: parts of the book
    • 99: extract

DOI

punctum books DOIs are based on PBNs. Since June 10, 2021, DOIs are registered through Crossref with the following form: 10.53288/[PBN]. Legacy DOIs registered through the California Digital Library EZID platform have the following form: 10.21983/P3.[PBN].
