3. Steps to Be Performed

After the copyeditor has finished editing the manuscript, they will return the manuscript to the author(s) via email, if it has been their instruction to do so. The format below is absolutely not a requirement, and the editors are encouraged to come up with their own signature way of doing things; however, this is a formula that has softened even the most bullish authors.

If the copyeditor is sending their notes to another editor or director, then only the recurring issues need to be sent to that editor or director.

Email formula

Include a few compliments to the manuscript at the top. These comments might be specific, and the editor might quote one or two lines. For example: "The author facilitated connections between archaeology and its sometimes problematic assumptions, which resulted in a diligent and productive survey of..."

Then, the editor will list a few recurring issues they faced when working through the manuscript. Working through the manuscript, the editor should keep track as they go. Note well that they should be recurring issues.

At the bottom of the email, the editor might include one or two nice and generalizing notes. For example, "despite these inconsistencies, the author demonstrated keen insights into a well-tread discipline." 

Then the editor will provide the authors with a link to their completed files. To do this on a Mac:

1. Go to the NextCloud files.
2. Right click on the copyediting folder that you worked on (e.g., "221006 for copyedit"). Be sure to click on the entire folder, not individual files.
3. Click on "NextCloud" under "Quick Actions" then "Copy External Link."
4. Insert the copied link into the email.

An incredibly long and needlessly detailed example:

Dear X,

I've finished copyediting Queer Communal Kinship Now! It provides definitions to the nebulous states of being felt by many in the various, weird, slutty, caring queer communities that many of us call home. You've offered an amuse bouche to "lame bourgeois modernity" that I at least have been craving. In this way, QCKN! was itself a helpful primer into this literature that will serve queer and not-yet-queer readers alike as they explore what it means for them to live in difference. As well, erudition when met with not a little cheek is often a pleasure to read and your text was no different. punctum is not in the business of tone-policing, so your "fucks" and "romantic love bullshit" and "breeders" stood proudly beside your academic definitions. In fact, that tact is very productive in your analysis.

I only have a few notes for the text:

1. It is punctum style to limit the use of colons and semicolons, so I lightly adjusted syntax to allow for clearer, more impactful sentences.
2. Especially in chapter three, I removed the italics from most of the terms. I was not able to discern a pattern between how you used words—such as queer, communal, kinship, and other defined terms—either italicized or not. The reader might find it more impactful when italics are used sparingly. I have preserved italicization for terms such as "enthusiasm," "hope," "optimism," and so forth at their first occurrence, because I wished to support you in highlighting those terms that we have for so long taken for granted. Stuffy, academic terms I placed in quotation marks at the first occurrence.
3. punctum insists on the Oxford/serial comma, and I speak for myself when I say I will die on that hill, proudly in either valor or disgrace.
4. At times, I was not sure if your use of "affect" as the theoretical approach, as the transitive verb, or as a misspelled noun "effect." If you could, I recommend searching for those terms in the documents, evaluating, and changing, if necessary. It might not be necessary though.
5. Please note that in the file structure, if my initials --LB are in the file name, that is the copyedited version. Don't be alarmed to find I created and edited only those files.
